Ajivikas

The Ajivikas sect was founded by Nanda Vachcha. The Ajivikas were Sudras. Makkhali Gosala or Gosala maskariputra popularized or spread this sect and his followers were centered on Sravasti. This sect flourished during Bindusara of the Maurya dynasty. According to Ashokavadana, Bindusara and his chief Queen Shubhadrangi were believers of this Philosophy, so that this sect reached its zenith during this time. The Mauryan rulers presented a numbers of caves for Ajivikas. Ajivikas considered the Karma. Ajivikas School is known for its Niyati. Makkhali Gosala a contemporary of the Buddha and Mahavira. The Ajivika sect spread in Ancient south India and western state of Gujarat in 4th century B.C. several rock-cut caves belonging to the Ajivikas dated of the times of Samrat Ashoka.
