Shaivism
The Pasupata and Lingayat sect belongs to the Shaivism. The Pasupata sect was founded by Lakulisa. The Kapalika and Kalamukhas were the Pasupata sects. The Lingayat sect was founded by Basava. He organized the Jangamas, a priestly class. They believed that, Shiva is only reality and Shakti resided in him. Vassugupta founded the Pratyabhinja School in Kashmir. Somananda founded the Spandastara School in Kashmir.
The Rig Veda has the earliest clear mention of Rudra or Shiva. The Nayanars, a tradition of poet saint of 7th century A.D. developed the Shaivism. They were composed Sambadar, Appar, and Sundarar. Appar, Sundaramurti and Manikavasagar were the great Tamil Shaiva saints.
The main elements of all Shaiva Tantra is the practice of Diksha, a ceremonial initiation, which are given by the Guru. In Patanjali’s Mahabhasya, first mention about the worship of Shiva. Early literature of Shaivite called Agamas. The Followers of Pasupata sect were called Pancharthic and it was the oldest sect, and Lingayat sect called Jangam. In elephant caves the Trimurti of Shiva found. There were another sect Kapalika, which god was Bhairava and its sect main center in Srisailam.
