Shishunaga dynasty (413-344 B.C.)
According to Purana, Shishunaga dynasty was the second dynasty of the Magadha. Shishunaga was the founder of the dynasty. Shishunaga an Amatya and Governor of Banaras, was ascended the throne with a strong rebellion after Nagadashaka the last ruler of the Haryanka dynasty. Rajgir, Vaishali, Pataliputra was the capital of the Haryanka dynasty. Common languages were Magadhi, Prakrit and Sanskrit. Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism were flourished in the Kingdom. This dynasty was succeeded by Nanda Empire.
Shishunaga (413-395 B.C.)
Shishunaga was the founder of the Shishunaga dynasty. He was an Amatya of the Haryanka dynasty’s ruler Nagadashaka and the governor of Banaras. He placed the throne after a strong rebellion.
According to Mahavamsa he was the son of the Lichchhavi ruler of Vaishali. Shishunaga ruled from 413-395 B.C. His capital was transformed Pataliputra to Rajagriha.Vaishali was the secondary capital. Later he shifted to his capital to vaishali.
He conquered Avanti and defeated the ruler Nandivardhana, last king of the Pradyota dynasty and he placed his son to Varanasi and he ruled from Rajagriha (Girivaraja). He also conquered the kingdom of Kosala and Vatsa.
He was succeeded by his son Kalashoka or Kakavarna.
Kalashoka (395-367 B.C.)
According to Purana, Shishunaga was succeeded by Kalashoka. In the Ceylonese writing said that the Kalashoka was succeeded by the Shishunaga. He divided his kingdom between his ten sons (Bhadrasena, Korandavarna, Mangura, Sarvanjaha, Jalika, Ubhaka, Sanjay, Koravya, Nandivardhan, and Panchamaka) and crowned his ninth son, Nandivardhana to Magadha’s King.
He transferred the capital Rajgriha to Pataliputra. The second Buddhist council was held in 383 B.C. in Vaishali during the time of Kalashoka. Nandivardhan was succeeded by Mahanandin, the last Shishunaga dynasty. Mahanandin was killed by his illegal son from a Shudra wife named Mahapadma Nanda.
